The Effect of Negotiator Creativity on Negotiation Outcomes

The results of this study demonstrate that the effects of individual creativity on negotiation outcomes are difficult to capture.
Situational variables potentially interact with creativity and thus moderate the effect of creativity on negotiation outcomes. For instance, several researchers found that motivation and exposure to diverse information influence creativity.
The findings in this study have important implications for negotiations as they involve that negotiation situations can be purposely designed to encourage accessibility of negotiators’ creative abilities. We are convinced that this intervention potentially improves negotiation outcomes, since creative thinking is inherently linked with negotiation.
Providing the conditions for creativity manifestation is not enough. Direct creativity teaching and training is needed as well. The studiy demonstrates the feasibility of creativity training to ameliorate negotiators’ problem solving skills and enhance their engagement in creative thinking patterns.
