Catalonië is van oudsher een van de meest industriële regio’s van Spanje. En hoewel Catalonië slechts 6% van het landsgedeelte inneemt, draagt het voor ruim 20% bij aan het bruto binnenlands product van Spanje en voor 30% aan de internationale handel.
Daarnaast is Catalonië de populairste vakantiebestemming van Spanje: in 2005 kwamen meer dan 13,2 miljoen toeristen naar de regio. Bovendien biedt de regio een eersteklas woon- en werkomgeving, met Barcelona als hoofdstad.
