With 20 to watch, Flanders DC presents twenty emerging talents, who recently took their first steps in the worlds of design or fashion. We believe they will have great success in the future.

After studying graphic design at LUCA in Ghent, I pursued an additional master’s degree in design, space and communication at HEAD in Geneva. Until then, I felt like I could never express myself perfectly. But I found my language in that multidisciplinary mix. I love to create compositions in space, combining graphic design, scenography and performance. It’s magical to me to have my spectators experience spatiality, and that I can make them experience something through my designs. What’s more, I like to work analogously, and I like tactility.

It’s not always easy to characterise myself. People who are in the industry themselves do understand the breadth of my practice. But outsiders often have a very narrow view of what a graphic designer does. That’s why I now have both a short and a long explanation of my work.

For a scenography assignment for Designregio Kortrijk, Manon De Cuyper and I only worked with materials that we received through local suppliers. Because we wanted to return the materials afterwards, we started looking for smart ways to connect them together. It was precisely these limitations that stimulated our creative process. I’m also working for Format in Z33 on a situated study of the Damvallei. From the 1930s to the 1960s, local tourism flourished at this recreational resort on the Scheldt, while now there’s a glaring lack of bathing spots. Through interviews I search for memories of this swimming past, which immediately form the basis for my reflections on a possible future.
