As in previous years, design platform FOR THE NOW will once again present creations by “binômes”: duos of creatives from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, who will start a research together. The aim is to develop a new visual language and challenge the established boundaries of design. Who are this year's duos? We are happy to introduce them.

FOR THE NOW is a presentation and sales platform for both established and emerging Belgian designers. FOR THE NOW is an initiative of Flanders DC and will take place in November at Tour&Taxis in Brussels.

This year, FOR THE NOW brings together two duos, one designer and one artist each. For a year, they will work intensively to create a product that will be presented during FOR THE NOW. With this track, this initiative wants to expand the boundaries of the design profession, rewrite the definition of design and make room for more inclusion.

Yoon Shun is designer and operates at the convergence of tradition and modernity, probing the tension between roughness and refinement, stability and movement. His practice begins with a direct, tactile engagement with materials – burning, carving, welding, and coiling – drawing out their latent potentials rather than imposing rigid forms. Each piece unfolds gradually, shaped by the passage of time, friction, and the marks left by human touch.

“My main motivation for this project is to engage with fellow artists by sharing thoughts and experiences, in order to sharpen my perspective on life and deepen my understanding of it.”

Binôme Robin Berrewaerts x Viva Sage Thabethe

Robin Berrewaerts works at the intersection of furniture and sculpture, with a strong emphasis on materiality and craftsmanship. He experiences working with wood as a physical interaction between material and artist. The transformation from tree to object resembles a journey, one that involves finding the right time and tools to create character and identity. Different approaches result in unique objects that evoke curiosity. The act of making a piece black – through oxidizing, burning or painting – finalizes his work and marks the end of the journey.

“What appeals to me about this project is connecting different cultures through the common language of craft and design. The universal language of making will thus be revealed, while exposing all differences.”
