As a child of his generation, graphic designer Victor Verhelst translates a constant flow of images into his creations, both in terms of content and aesthetics. He wants to use his colourful universe to amaze people and bring a touch of magic to their lives.

With 20 to watch, Flanders DC presents twenty emerging talents, who recently took their first steps in the worlds of design or fashion. We believe they will have great success in the future.

What makes you different from other designers?

I create both applied and free and spatial work, and try to blur the boundaries between these two worlds as much as possible. When I work for a client, I prefer to have carte blanche. Although I will of course enter into a dialogue with them, I am convinced that this strong personal touch contributes to the soul of a creation. Since each design is the result of a search for the history and DNA of the assignment (or client), to which I give a personal interpretation, at a certain moment I feel that a design is right. That’s why it’s difficult for me to make, say, twenty different proposals. Besides, I don’t want to make work that’s easily consumable; I’d rather tread on some toes.

What is the biggest challenge in your work?

Not losing the power and emotion to create, and letting my universe grow at the same time. Since that requires a lot of discipline, and since right now I want to be able to focus fully on my work, I still live with my parents. My studio is a sacred place where I routinely work every day, like an athlete. Only through a lot of practice will I achieve the quality I have in mind.

How do you deal with sustainability?

When I buy paper, I always buy a full palette. And then I try to use it as economically as possible. I also use soy ink for my craft riso press and banana paper for my clichés. My dream is to set up a kind of lab where I can apply different printing techniques, so that I can make everything myself in small editions.
