Judassime is the alter ego of non-binary Benjamin Voortmans. Their performance project is gradually growing into a full-fledged label. The focus is on semi-couture with a dark edge, but there will also be ready-to-wear.
With 20 to watch, Flanders DC presents twenty emerging talents, who recently took their first steps in the worlds of design or fashion. We believe they will have great success in the future.
Who is Judassime?
Judassime is a safe umbrella to express my brand and everything I create as an artist. In the third year of secondary school, I always argued with my religion teacher about how people often run away from reality and prefer to hide in religion. At one point, a classmate said: you are such a Judas. That resonated with me and my view of this world. I look at a reality that not everyone wants to see and create a free space for myself and other people to feel empowered in their own way.
I use my brand stories and performance art to broach touching topics that are often silenced in this society. Judassime allows me to capture the complex beauty of the unknown. My latest collection, “The Wrong Deal”, is about the glorification of the abuse of the female figure in old Hollywood. Those deep stories were close to my emotions, and I had to design something that was true to that and give some kind of strength back to that strong figure. Many brands create on the basis of a trend or what sells well. I design more from an emotional place.
My path to get here wasn’t the easiest, but I fought for what I own today. Although I sometimes work in a restaurant in the evenings and perform in a club on the weekends to pay for my fabrics, I will never give up on shaping my own universe. With ready-to-wear soon to see the light of day, I hope to help Judassime grow and provide it with its own financial support system. My brand is a fully constructed identity in which semi-couture and read-to-wear will be perfectly combined.
